  • Boostrix Vaccine is used as a booster to protect against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough) in individuals aged 4 years and older who have completed their primary vaccination. It is also given during pregnancy to help protect newborns from pertussis through passive immunity. Boostrix Vaccine is given as a single injection into the muscle, usually in the upper arm, by a doctor or a nurse. It should not be self-administered. To get the most benefit, follow your immunization schedule and receive the booster at the recommended time. For pregnant women, the doctor may recommend receiving Boostrix Vaccine in the second or third trimester to protect the baby from pertussis during early infancy. Common side effects of Boostrix Vaccine include injection site reactions (pain, redness, or swelling), fever, fatigue, and general discomfort. These effects are usually mild and temporary. If they persist or become bothersome, consult your doctor. Serious allergic reactions are rare, but immediate medical attention is needed if you experience symptoms such as rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness. Boostrix Vaccine should not be given to individuals with known allergies to any component of the vaccine or those who experienced severe reactions (such as encephalopathy or convulsions) after a previous dose of a diphtheria, tetanus, or pertussis vaccine. It should be postponed in people with a high fever or severe illness. Use with caution in individuals with bleeding disorders or low platelet counts. Pregnant women can safely receive the vaccine during the second or third trimester.
